Closely related to the Exuma Islands Iguana, only two native breeding populations of this subspecies are known, both in the Exumas chain in the Bahamas, on Leaf and U Cay. Two other populations have been established through translocations (moving iguanas from one island to another). The entire population is estimated at 1000 iguanas. The natural history of this iguana is perhaps the best understood of any Rock Iguana due to a 20 year population monitoring and research program.

Distribution: Bahamas

Size: Males to 476mm SVL Females to 368mm SVL

Status: I.U.C.N. Red List - Threatened Two of the three small cays support fairly dense populations of iguanas with only about seven adults remaining on the third.

Legal Status: U.S. Endangered Species Act - Threatened C.I.T.E.S. - Appendix I

Priority Activities: Incorporate all three cays into the Exuma Land and Sea Park. Introduced non-native trees are threatening nesting areas and should be removed. Collect reproductive data on marked populations. Consider modifying sinkholes on one cay to create additional iguana nesting habitats.

Number Remaining: Estimated at 1,000 (very few captives).
